First of please introduce yourself and your site to our readers?
I'm Layng Martine and I have the site www.milliondollarzoom.com.
Most people have been inspired by the Million Dollar Homepage, where did you get your inspiration from?
It started when I agreed to help a friend sell a vintage comic book collection on Ebay. My friend was showing me how some of the big auction houses sell their comics, and they were using this zooming technology that I found really impressive. Once I figured out how they were doing it, we were able to post very high resolution scans on a webpage and visitors could zoom in on them and navigate around easily. I thought to myself, 'Wow - this is a really great technology - there's got to be a much better use for this than selling comic books!" The next day, I was reading a local paper and read about The Million Dollar Homepage.
What software do you use to run your pixel page and why did you choose it?
I use Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver. The zoom feature requires Flash and Dreamweaver is just simple and easy to use.
What makes your site different or special, what angle have you taken for your Pixel page?
I thought The Million Dollar Homepage was a brilliant idea. But to me, the problem was that 10x10 pixel blocks sold for $100 were too small to display anything meaningful. So I've improved that. The notion of selling pixels was a perfect fit for the zooming technology I had been working with - you can have virtually unlimited space.
Million Dollar Zoom! is set up on a 10,000 x 10,000 pixel grid (that's 100 million pixels!) When you first go to the site, you see all those pixels condensed down into a 400 x 400 space. You can then zoom in from there all the way up to full resolution and navigate around. It's fun and it works quite well. For advertisers, this means ten times more area to communicate their message and link to their sites.
The original pixel page generated traffic mainly through viral marketing mainly spawned by media interest, how do you generate traffic to your site?
Word of mouth and blogs.
What do you offer potential advertisers, how much do you charge and how much traffic do you envisage an advertiser could generate by advertising with you?
$100 for 10,000 pixels. It's early in the life of milliondollarzoom.com - too early to tell.
Currently the top 5 Alexa ranked pixel sites enjoy a lot of interest from the public. How long do you think this will last, is there a long term future for pixel pages?
I believe the concept will continue to evolve. My site represents a step in that direction.
Besides your own pixel page, which other pixel page do you secretly admire and why?
I only admire the Million Dollar Homepage because of its success. I haven't seen any others that really add something original to that concept.
Thanks for your time in answering these questions. Before you go are there any comments you want to impart to our pixel hungry readership?
May your day be filled with pixel sales.
