History of the Million Dollar Homepage

The story starts with Alex Tew who was looking for a way to make enough money to support him whilst at university. It didn’t take long for him to come up with the million Dollar homepage. The idea was that a page of one million pixels divided into 10 by 10 pixel blocks would be sold off at 100 dollars at a time.

The idea was that Alex wanted to come up with an idea that was simple and would grab media attention. After Alex released a press release many of the national newspapers picked up on the story and visitors to the site spiralled. Alex Tew had secured his place in history.

Pixel pages

It didn’t take long for dozens of imitation sites to appear, before long that number turned into hundreds. To start off with many of the million dollar homepage sites were exact copies of the original but soon sites started appearing with their own unique selling point.

Moving forward

Some webmasters have started to integrate mini pixel pages into their existing sites. The future of the pixel page cites some examples of this.
